South Africa faces two urgent, connected crises: staggering youth unemployment and the slow decay of the public spaces communities depend on. GEM SA exists at the intersection of both. We mobilise unemployed young people to restore dignity to public environments and in doing so, equip them with the skills, experience, and pathways they need to build sustainable livelihoods.
GEM SA is a registered South African non-profit company mobilising and developing unemployed young people through structured community service and enterprise-oriented skills development. We help youth build sustainable livelihoods while strengthening the communities they serve, turning idle potential into visible, lasting public good.
We don’t see marginalised youth as a problem to be managed. We see them as an untapped asset, ready to drive change in their own communities.
A South Africa where every young person in a marginalised community has a credible pathway to opportunity, dignity, and economic independence, contributing to resilient, thriving public environments.
To mobilise and develop unemployed young people through structured community service and enterprise-oriented skills development, empowering them to build sustainable livelihoods while strengthening the communities they serve.
We deploy youth participants to restore public dignity through the maintenance, cleaning, and rehabilitation of communal spaces turning neglected areas into places communities can be proud of again.
We engage young people in green initiatives, waste management, and ecological preservation, building environmental consciousness alongside practical skills.
We improve learning environments through infrastructure upgrades, maintenance, and support services in local schools because better spaces make better classrooms.
We equip participants with practical, marketable skills and entrepreneurial acumen, helping them move from service beneficiaries to income-generating individuals.
Community service is our starting point, not our end goal. Every GEM SA participant is supported along a structured pathway toward real economic independence:
